The taste of bile was his first conscious sensation, the pounding in his left temple the second. Forcing one eye open, he realized he lay on a concrete floor in a pool of befoulment so ripe, vomit again rose in the back of his throat. Despite the pain and vertigo, he pushed himself up on one elbow to lean against the steel post beside him. He could barely make out his surroundings in the black night. Adjusting to the dark, he remembered where he was.
What had happened? Someone… That’s right. Someone hit him; knocked him out. The effort to remember made his head throb so hard his eyes bulged. Oh yeah. That bitch. That goddamned bitch had clubbed him. He’d kill her for this.
What was that? Footsteps? Yes, behind him. By the swamp. It had to be her.
Lifting his chin from his chest, he turned his head toward the noise.
